The Practice of Sustainable Design
This piece from my Spring 2013 course, The Practice of Sustainable Design, answered the challenge of designing a charging station for electric vehicles that could sustainably integrate into the surrounding city. My Heart of Earth charging station was powered by a skin of solar panels over ribs of locally-sourced, glued-laminate wood; the use of the skin and bones of our planet was intended to highlight the connections we humans share with Earth. Beyond offering a renewable source of travel energy, this station was intented to become a hub of information on local businesses and a point of rest for the adjacent park through the interactive, heart-shaped info kiosk and other furniture made from fired clay.
