Seventeen years is too long to wait for a mass emergence of sustainability.
About
Welcome to this online documentation of my journey through the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) Sustainable Design Online masters program. Through sharing part of my journey, perhaps I can encourage others to consider sustainability within their owns lives.
Bio
My journey toward sustainability has been a winding road. I pursued a technical path in college and graduate school majoring in some sort of engineering both times, although I did consider Lutheran ministry at one point in my educational career. I took a research position at a the Savannah River National Laboratory and was fortunate to study wind energy in my home state of South Carolina. While I was born in SC, my heart has always lived in the mountains of Western North Carolina. My wife and I recently moved to Asheville, NC, in the heart of those mountains. That place connection is a powerful motivator for creating a sustainable future, and although my new job is not directly tied to sustainability, it does enable me to continue in MCAD’s Sustainable Design Online program while establishing a permanent place in my heart-home.
Sustainability Philosophy

Sustainability is about reconnecting humans to the cycles of the larger world. By finding a role that supports all life on earth, rather than just ourselves, we may find a new way to thrive. My own view of sustainability was partly inspired by Bucky Fuller and his use of the Spaceship Earth concept.
